Preparing your artwork for Spain Property Pages
How do you make sure that the images you provide for Spain
Property Pages will look good when printed? You've probably noticed
that sometimes, images that appear in print look sharp and full
of colour, other times they look grainy and washed out. The difference
usually is in the resolution of the original image supplied. If
you're taking photos with a digital camera, you'll have several
quality or resolution settings with which to take the photo. If
you take a high resolution photo, it's possible to reduce the quality
later on. If you take a low resolution photo to start with, there's
no way to increase the resolution or quality later on. The same
is true of printed images, we can't start with a low quality image
and make it look good when printed.
To print correctly, images must be of sufficient
size and quality.
Quality is measured by the resolution of the image. Most internet
images have a resolution of 72 dpi (dots per inch, equivalent to
the pixels on a computer screen). So, on a computer screen, an image
that is 1 inch wide by 1 inch high (25.4mm wide x 25.4mm high) would
be 72 pixels wide by 72 pixels high. We print the newspaper at a
higher resolution or quality than a screen image - 300 dpi. So,
if we take this same 72dpi x 72dpi image and want to print it at
the same quality as it appears on the screen, we need to make it
roughly one quarter of the size (300dpi/72dpi) - the image would
physically appear as 1/4 inch wide x 1/4 inch tall (6mm x 6mm).
Conversely, if we wanted the print image to be the same physical
size as the screen image, we would need to increase it's resolution
to 300 dpi, roughly four times the resolution or quality or increase
the image size by four times at 72dpi.
Advert size is measured in millimetres - the size
sheet contained in our current
price list tells you physically how big the adverts will appear
in the newspaper. For example, a half page advert is physically
260mm wide x 150mm high. Let's say that you have an image that's
exactly this size at 72 dpi and you want to use this image for your
half page advert. To fill the advert space, SPP would have to expand
the image size by four times, this would result in a loss of quality
by the same proportion. So although the image looks OK on screen,
it would probably be of poor quality when printed in the newspaper.
To counteract this, you'd need to supply this 72dpi image physically
four times larger than normal - roughly 1040mm x 600mm.
To summarise, image quality is
a function of its physical size and its resolution. If you have
a low resolution image (72dpi) it needs to be four times the physical
size than the print space you want it to fill. If you have a high
resolution image (300dpi) it needs to be the same size as the advert
space.
To provide images of the best possible quality
for Spain Property Pages, either use your digital camera at it's
highest resolution setting, or when scanning images, scan them at
300dpi. If you are in any doubt, send us the image you'd like to
use and we'll tell you if there are any issues that may cause print
problems.
